Okay, I've been playing guitar for a while now, but I want to expand my knowledge……..
Basically, can you tell me what I need to learn.
I know all the basics (chords, etc…), but when someone mentions music theory, notes, that kind of stuff, my mind goes blank….. lol (o.O)
I want to learn what I SHOULD learn.
I'm self taught, so if you have any websites, or anything of that sort, it would be a ton of help…..!
Thanks a bunch!
PS Can you also tell me what Music Theory IS? Just what is it….
Simple. :]
(yeah, I know, bad question title…. :] )
I think the best way to describe Music Theory is that it is the language of Music. If you understand the language of Music, you then have the potential to play any instrument.
So if you learn tabs and chords, but you don't know what it means, then you are just learning the guitar. But if you study scales, notes, progressions, and harmonies then you can apply that knowledge to any instrument and you can compose music.
Music Theory are the rules (more like guidelines) that drive music. Any song I create, was created by the guidelines of music theory. But don't look at them as restrictions, you have to look at it as tips. Because of Music Theory I know what chords I can play within a Key. That way I don't waste my time playing chords that don't fit in that key, thus sound terrible.
I'd look at this website, so you can start to learn notes and keys and scales. That will start you in learning music theory. It is very beneficial to learn it, because it helps you compose and create.

Good Luck.
